Buoyed by inflation, “Dollar stores” are multiplying in the U.S.A., particularly in rural areas. Dollar General (Q3 sales of US$9.5 billion, up by 11%) plans to open 1,050 stores next year. The Popshelf brand, which targets more affluent customers (selling beauty products and decoration), will grow from 150 to 300 retail units by 2023. This year, with rival Dollar Tree (DT), they will have opened 1,300 stores between them. In comparison, Five Below and TJX have opened “only” 100 stores each.
