Initially planned over 37,000 sq.m GLA, the future Ikea store opposite the Central Station on Kalvebod Brygge, will finally open in 2023 over a reduced area of 19,000 sq.m. This freehold store will offer space-saving products that are easy to carry on foot or by bicycle (Denmark boasts biggest bicycle community). Bulky products like armchairs, sofas or bedding will be delivered to customers. This change of strategy is due to an increase in click & collect and home delivery services. “All retailers have noticed that e-commerce is exploding. It now makes no sense to pay for so much space in a city warehouse, and correspondingly less need for a large furniture store”, said Anders Lyhne Nordtorp, Expansion Manager at Ikea Group.
