In Japan, where bankruptcies linked to labour shortages jumped by 32% in 2024, convenience store chain Lawson has been testing remote cashiers based in Europe and the U.S.A. since January 2025. These cashiers serve customers via animated avatars on screens at the checkout. The aim is to increase productivity in 14,608 Japanese stores amid a labour shortage, while keeping costs under control. Thanks to the time difference, the 24-hour chain can employ day staff to cover night shifts.
