Austria: 3.4 percent increase for agency workers

On Tuesday, November 27, the social partners in the temporary work industry – the PRO-GE union and the representatives of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKÖ) agreed on a new collective agreement on pay alone, which will run for one year starting on January 1, 2013.  On this day, wages will increase by 3.4 percent and bonuses by 3 percent.  Besides, hourly minimum wage for each skill category will increase as follows: skilled technicians will earn €16.28/hour, skilled workers €13.22, workers with no additional skills €11.53, skilled employees €10.25, and ‘simple’ employees €9.12.  With this last category, absolute minimum wage in the interim industry will amount to €1.427,92/month.  This increase comes with general improvements to working and pay conditions, following the amendment to the Interim Act (Arbeitskräfteüberlassungsgesetz – AÜG), expected to come into force on January 1, 2013 (see our dispatch No.  120524 for the draft).  This Act, adopted on October 16, refers to the European directive and contains numerous provisions improving information, protection and training for agency workers.  In 2014, a Support and Training Fund will be created, subsidized by the State for three years and by temporary work agencies.  In many areas (social benefits, supplementary pension), agency workers should gradually achieve equality with permanent staff, depending on the duration of the contract.
