Austria: agreement in metallurgy on partly flexible wage increases, according to the firm’s situation

At the end of the fourth round of negotiations, social partners of the Austrian metallurgical industry finally found an agreement. Employers not only succeeded in limiting wage increases at 2.6 % but also in making them "flexible": « an agreement that meets the economy's wishes », acknowledges the metalworkers' trade union. The metalworkers’ trade union (Gewerkschaft Metall Textil und Nahrung GMTN) struggled during two months to obtain a wage increase higher than 3 %. But failed. On November 2nd, the social partners agreed on a 2.6 % wage increase which concerns the sector’s 161 000 employees, valid from November 1st, 2006. Employers can also choose « the sharing out option », a practice already used in other branches. The sharing out option means the employer must pay a global increase of 2.9 % in volume. But
