On 17 September, the trade union Vida and the federation for goods transport presented the first global collective agreement for bicycle delivery riders. The deal provides for a monthly minimum gross wage of €1,506.14. It also addresses the issues of working time, paid leave and the funding of equipment. The agreement has been hailed as an important basis for beginning to transform the often-dreadful working conditions of a fiercely competitive industry. Since companies in the sector are known to favour service contracts with independent delivery riders rather than hiring them, the question remains as to how many riders the agreement will actually apply to.
Commenting on the deal, Vida’s federal secretary Karl Delfs said: “With this collective agreement, we are laying the foundations for a system of social protection and work for deliver riders.
