Brazil: bill toughens truck drivers’ working conditions

The Parliament is looking at a bill on working conditions (PLC 41) for truck, cargo and passenger drivers. This amendment of the “truck drivers’ act” - also known as the resting act - comes 2 years after a text was adopted that improved working conditions in the sector. Those who criticize the law point to a risk of higher mortality on the road only to please employers’ interests, whereas the latter point to the lack of infrastructure to apply the previous law.

Barely 2 years after adopting a law improving working conditions for truck drivers (Act 12 619), the Senate approved, on June 4, a bill validated a few weeks earlier by the Chamber of Deputies. It increases truck drivers’ daily driving time and reduces statutory mandatory resting time.

Up to 12 hours’ work a day. The bill, a synthesis of 2 other texts analyzed by Congress, still provides for an 8-hour workday. However, it allows 2 extra hours and another 2 if a collective labor agreement provide
