Two company directors of an Ontario based company have been jailed for 25 days after they pleaded guilty to negligence that led to death of an employee. Although not the first, this sentence clearly indicates a toughening in Canadian justice on the issue of occupational health and safety. In a break with current practice, unions are pushing for criminal law to apply in cases where company bosses do not fulfill their responsibilities and a worker dies as a result.
