The Chilean president announced on 2 June that reducing working time will be one his government's priorities. A bill to trim down the current 45-hour work week to 40 hours is to be presented to parliament after hearings with the social partners, as well as with academics, experts and research centres. This extensive consultation will take place from 13 to 24 June.
A campaign promise. Gabriel Boric, the left-wing president who came to power on 11 March with a programme of new social rights, confirmed this priority in his annual address to parliament on 2 June “Work is just one of the many dimensions of life and in Chile there is not enough time for rest and recreation,” he said, adding: “For this reason, we will back a bill that reduces [weekly] working hours to 40, taking into account the adaptable and gradual nature of its implementation.”
