According to data from the Hong Kong based NGO, China Labour bulletin, there were 569 incidents of social protest in the fourth quarter of 2014; more than three times as many as the same period in 2013.
87% of strikes and social protests were demanding higher wages or benefits and back pay. 36% of all incidents were in the manufacturing industry that is suffering both from a drop in international demand and the end of the ‘China is the workshop of the world’ economic model. 31% of all incidents were in the construction industry.
