Representatives from 82 organizations and 12 sectoral federations from 36 European countries, representing about 60 million members, are expected on May 16th in Athens, a few days after the 10th general strike the Greek unions organized against the austerity measures. The political, economic and social situation is quite different than at the last Congress in Seville in 2007. On top of the economic crisis that badly hit the European countries, the union organization says there is also the EU’s social fall, for it was unable to appropriately combat businesses’ assaults to workers’ rights.
