The European Commission started, on September 12, 2007, an in-depth investigation to establish whether a 6.02 million euros grant the Flemish Region intends to give in support of training at Volvo Cars Gent is compatible with the EC Treaty rules on State aid. (Ref. 070744)
The beneficiary of this grant, which Belgian authorities notified in May 2007, would be Volvo Cars Gent, which is part of the Ford Motor Company. The plant, which was opened in 1965, employs 4.800 people and produced 240.000 Volvo cars in 2006. The company is introducing a new production platform, more flexible, which will allow Volvo Cars Gent to produce not only Volvo cars, but also Ford and Jaguar models. The supported training activities would take place in this context.
