On 10 March the European Commission presented its new strategy to support Europe’s industry face the twin challenges of climate neutrality and the digital transition. In its press statement, the EU Commission highlighted that the package of initiatives ‘outlines a new approach to European industrial policy that is firmly rooted in European values and social market traditions.’
Tackling unfair competition within and outside the EU. The EU Commission recognizes the need for fair competition both within and outside the EU. Internally, this includes EU competition rules as well as the ongoing assessment of merger control and the appropriateness of State Aid guidelines. As regards State Aid guidelines, new rules will be implemented in 2021 ‘in a certain number of priority areas, including support for energy and environmental protection,’ and to guarantee ‘that they are fit for the purpose of an economy that is changing fast, increasingly digital and must become greener and more circular.’
