On 09 March 2016, several hundreds of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of 130 towns and cities throughout France demanding that the labor law reform bill be withdrawn. The mobilization answers a call from student and college union organizations as well as the employee union bodies, CGT, FO, FSU and Solidaires. The organizations are demanding a pure and simple withdrawal of the text whilst four ‘reformist’ unions (CFDT, CFE-CGC, CFTC, and Unsa) want to amend three main points: working time flexibility, lay-offs for economic grounds, and labor tribunal compensation awards. The Government could make changes to these points before the text goes to the Council of Ministers on 24 March. The government is also considering a charge for fixed term employment contracts.
A day after the French national demonstration rallied between some 250,000 and 500,000, the country’s government continues to collaborate with the social partners over the reform bill being put forward by Minister for Labor, Myriam El Khomri, and Prime Minister Manuel Valls will present changes to the draft law on Monday 14 March before the text goes to the Council of Ministers on 24 March.
