Germany: 22 000 engineers’ positions remain vacant

The national Confederation of German engineers (VDI) has just issued a cry of distress facing the growing problems of German firms to hire engineers. With 39 400 new diplomas last year, Germany is no longer training enough engineers. (Ref 061241)

« There are nowadays 22 000 vacant engineering positions in the German economy », said Eike Lehmann, president of the VDI. In April, the deficit was still 18 000 positions : « But with the economic recovery, we should reach 25 000 positions in 2007 », he specified. The demand is huge in almost all sectors. Over the year 2005/2006, ThyssenKrupp, for instance, hired 27 % more young engineers than the previous year. The most affected areas are shipbuilding, metallurgy and the building of equipment
