On Wednesday 23 August, German cabinet adopted a bill to modernise and speed up the process for acquiring German nationality. The bill, which will now be examined by the Bundestag, follows on from the law passed before the summer on the immigration of skilled workers.
The bill to update Germany’s citizenship law, adopted by the German cabinet on 23 August, aims to establish clear rules for better social, democratic and economic integration of the millions of people who have settled in Germany for a long period. More than 12 million people of immigrant origin live in Germany but do not have German citizenship, amounting to around one in seven inhabitants.
