Germany: Deutsche Bahn to introduce new part-time apprenticeship for single parents

1.6m single parents.  “These days, vocational training must be compatible with raising a kid” explained DB Personnel Director Ulrich Weber when launching “2012, the apprenticeship year” on September 3.  This year, DB is going to train 3,700 new apprentices and let 350 students do dual training (vocational training combined with school).  Their prospects are excellent since 96 percent of those who came before them signed a full-time contract when completing training.  Starting next year, this “load” of potential workers will have a new card: young single parents.  According to the German Federation of Single Mothers and Fathers, there are about 1.6m single parents in Germany at the moment.  Stuck between making a living alone and raising their children, they are a major asset but, because of timing issues, can rarely access professional training.
