Germany: Deutsche Telekom confirmed that 50,000 employees will be transferred to a new subsidiary

On the occasion of the presentation of annual results to the press and to analysts, on March 1, 2007, René Obermann, Deutsche Telekom's chair, presented its new strategy, confirming the transfer of 50,000 employees to T-Service, a new subsidiary. The day before, 13,000 people demonstrated in Bonn's streets to object to the plan. Unions are accusing the management of lying about the figures. (Ref. 070190)

For Deutsche Telekom, this year was a disaster. On its main market, the former monopoly lost an important number of clients and its profitability was severely undermined by the prices war. In addition, in the internet and mobile telephony era, DT is still bearing the past’s expenses, meaning the importance of its activities and its landline division (T-Com). Meanwhile, the development of the high-speed DSL network requires important investments. DT thus still wants to reduce its overall costs.
