Germany: new improvements of the apprenticeship market “thanks” to the decline in birth rate

Better professional prospects for young people.  As an introduction, Mrs. Schavan reminded that there was a close relation between businesses’ economic health and the situation on the apprenticeship market.  Therefore, the main unknown lied within the impact of the financial and economic crisis on the report of the 2009-2010 apprenticeship year (between October 1, 2009 and September 30, 2010).  Yet, unlike the forecasts of the Federal Institute for Vocational Training (BIBB), which banked on a drop in 2010 of apprenticeship offers, businesses maintained their training offers, notable thanks to the economic recovery.  In total, 560,073 new apprenticeship contracts were signed in 2010 in Germany, i.e. 0.8% less than in 2009.  The number of free places (19,605) was against higher than the number of applicants (12,255).  According to the Minister of Education, this mostly comes from the lower number of applicants due to the decline in birth rate.  Therefore, it is a “good sign” for young people who will have an increasingly less hard time finding a place, but also a “warning” to businesses, who will have an increasingly hard time finding the number of apprentices they need in the years to come.
