Germany: new steel collective agreement provides for a 3.8% increase and the recruitment of apprentices

3.8% increase.  “It was a ‘tough start’ but we got an excellent result” rejoiced Oliver Burkhard, leader of the IG-Metall in North Rhine-Westphalia.  Reminding the uncertain character of the economic situation, Helmut Koch, negotiator for employers, was much more reserved, yet pointed to the agreement’s length.  Thus, the agreement will retroactively come into force on November 1, 2011, and will expire on February 28, 2013.  Starting on December 1, the 75,000 employees of the businesses located in North Rhine-Westphalia, low Saxony and Bremen will see their wages increase by 3.8%.  Initially, the IG-Metall was calling for a 7% increase.
