Germany: the arrival of IG Metall and Verdi unions at SAP, computing giant, is not achieved smoothly

After imposing the election of a WC in June 2006 (see our story n°06629), IG Metall and Verdi, the two largest German unions, are hoping that they will be able to place two of their representatives within the company's supervisory board (16 members) the renewal of which will take place on May 10, 2007. Next May, two unionists – who are not employed at SAP – will be candidates on a common IG Metall-Verdi list to try to have the delegates, chosen by SAP’s German staff, elect them to the company’s supervisory board. According to the laws of German joint management, employees’ representatives are allowed 8 to 16 seats in the board (1 executive, 5 employees and 2 union representatives). If IG Metall and Verdi get what they want, it will be a first in the history of this firm which, until last year
