Germany : trade unions satisfied by temporary assessment of Work’s councils elections

The Confederation of German trade unions (DGB) introduced, on 28 September 2006, a temporary assessment of the electoral results (work's councils) of last spring. Almost 50% of the results are known (40 000 elections). With a record participation of 81%, and 73% of seats won by trade unionists, the DGB has reasons to be happy. (Ref. 06955)

German trade unions are very satisfied by the first results of the 2006 professional elections (Betriebsrat). These elections take place every 4 years. “Voters’ turnout in political elections has decreased, but the turnout for work’s councils elections has increased. This means people trust works councils and believe in their role within the company” said Dietmar Hexel, of the DGB. 81% of workers voted, which is the highest rate in more than 20 years.
