Harriet Harman, the Equalities Minister, developed a bill to help women and black employees achieve equality. This step towards positive action pleases neither MPs, nor associations promoting equal treatment. (Ref. 080243)
This much-disputed clause could be added to the Single Equality Bill, a longed-for new law which will be presented in the fall. If it is implemented, businesses will be allowed to give jobs to qualified minority or female candidates in preference to white men with equal skills.
