The coalition Conservative-Liberal Democrat has suffered a defeat on its legislative plans to allow, and encourage, workers to give up their rights to claim unfair dismissal, be paid a redundancy settlement and request flexible working and training in return for gaining shares in the company. Peers voted an amendment removing this system from the bill on the subject. (Ref. 130196)
In the second chamber, the House of Lords, peers voted to remove Clause 27 of the Growth and Infrastructure Bill. Following the government commissioning of the Beecroft report on removing so-called ‘red tape’ on business, this represents the second set back in the last six months for the coalition government’s attempts to liberalise the regulation of the labour market and employment. Last October, the government withdrew its then plans for no-fault dismissals.
