Great Britain: mandatory retirement at 65 triggers a controversy

The future law against discriminations related to age prohibits employers from forcing an employee to retire before the age of 65. But past 65, the employer is free to do so. This last point causes the anger of trade unions and the lobby of the third age. (Réf. 06630)

The bill against discrimination linked to age (Age Discrimination Act), whose entry into force is due on 1 October 2006, satisfied the Employers Forum one Age as well as the lobby of the third age “Age Concern”, and trade unions. Except on one point, where everybody disagrees with the government : the permission given to employers to force an employee to retire, if he is at least 65 years old.
