Great Britain: more and more suits concerning asbestos at work

Asbestos is the first cause of occupational deaths. Experts foretell an increase in the number of suits brought by sick employees. (Ref. 080342)

More and more suits. In one week in april, three suits concerning asbestos were registered: two concerned workers who developed lung cancer (mesothelioma), who each received more than ₤150.000 in damages. The first worker, Peter Guy, developed the illness after long exposure to asbestos in the 1960s on a shipyard, got ₤20.000, temporarily. The other, Kenneth Chapman, was exposed to teh asbestos used in pipes and locomotive boilers when working for New Southern Rail. A mesothelioma was diagnosed
