Indian group Tata Steel announced on Tuesday 20 October that almost 1,200 jobs would be lost in yet another brutal blow to the UK’s steel industry. Businesses and unions in the sector warn that the country’s steel industry risks being completely wiped out and they have called on the government to act.
For several days now the UK’s steel industry has been taking hit upon hit. After Thai company SSI announced the closure of its Redcar steelworks plant resulting in 2,200 layoffs (c.f. article No. 9289) and British group Caparo collapsed with 1,700 jobs on the line, the Indian company Tata Steel has in turn announced it is implementing a social plan that will affect 1,200 jobs. So, after just a few days, more than 5,000 jobs are under threat.
