The union campaign for higher pay rises is continuing well beyond the summer period. Traditionally, most pay rise settlement dates been focussed on or around the 1 January or the 1 April every year. But with economic growth not producing much upward lift in pay rises, unions have often refused to accept what they see as unsatisfactory offers, pressing for higher offers frequently using industrial action to put pressure on what they see as intransigent employers.
