Great Britain: Unison and GMB unions get closer before merger

Combining the membership of the second and third biggest unions will easily outstrip that of Unite which is currently the biggest union with 1,414,000 members. The new alliance between Unison and the GMB merger is premised on more of political logic than industrial logic given the limited overlap in terms of public sector membership. Compared to Unite, both Unison and the GMB are politically moderate compared to Unite which takes a more radical stance.
