India: an original approach to digital transformation

During some valuable time spent in India, a member of the Planet Labor team found it impossible to resist the opportunity to study and share how the country is progressing along its digital transformation path. Such a study however implies digressing temporarily from Planet Labor’s traditional foci. Following three days in Delhi listening to demonetization explanations and Digital India’s ambitions, as well as meeting several start-up companies, this piece is presented as a ‘discovery report’ on a country that appears to have nothing to lose and everything to gains from digitalizing its economy.

The first remarkable point is that government policy is wholeheartedly behind digitalization. Modi’s government launched the ‘Digital India’ program in 2014, which intended for INR 1.13 trillion (€15.5 billion) to be allocated over the following five years towards transforming India’s economy via digitalization (‘Transform India onto an empowered society and knowledge economy’).
