India’s government intends to implement two major social programs, one for mortality, ageing, and maternity to cover some 500 million workers in the informal sector and a second providing health insurance for the most needy.
Since 2015 the government has been trying to implement a system of universal social security. Labor Minister Santosh Gangwar confirmed in a Bloomberg article on 05 June that in July a draft social security code would be submitted to Parliament.
The draft text intends to provide protection for all Indian workers, including those in the informal sector (unregulated and without protection). 500 million would thus have access to benefits for families undergoing bereavement, old age and maternity. As
