International: new global manufacturing union federation

Over 800 delegates representing metalworkers, textile workers and chemical workers from 140 countries took part in this event, prepared by the managing structures of the three founding unions for a little over two years.  Bertold Huber, former leader of the IMF and of the IG-Metall, announced that the new federation wanted to be stronger than each of the three individual organizations, in order to “counterweight to the power of the global capital and fight for decent work and a sustainable future.”  To illustrate the progress made, the IMF’s former general secretary, Jyrki Raina, who will be the new organization’s leader, reminded that the IMF was created in 1893 by 30 metalworkers from 8 countries.
