Italy : government wants to toughen regulation on fixed-term employment contracts

Italy is going to reform its legislation on fixed-term contracts, in order to make their use more restrictive. This is the latest plan of Employment Minister Cesare Damiano (DS, Left-wing democrats) who gave the social partners a few weeks –until February 2007- to reach a common opinion on this subject. If there is no agreement, the government will adopt a restrictive bill. (Ref.061217)

Changing the rules. The minister was clear on his plans. “The normal employment contract is an open-ended one”. Fixed-term contracts must be motivated by the temporary nature of the work to be accomplished. They must not exceed a certain percentage of the company’s total enrolment.
