Italy: unions and government still divided over the issue of “left-out” workers

Government and unions have been fighting over the number of “left-out” workers for months.  Besides, last week, the National Social Welfare Institution (INPS) released figures saying that 390,000 were affected.  Later denies, this number was partially confirmed this week by the Foundation of Labor Consultants which claims they are 370,000.  At the same time, even the Abi banking employers’ organization sounded the alarm on “left-out” workers in the banking industry, saying that there are about 20,000 and that the government only took 17,710 into consideration.  However, Labor Minister Elsa Fornero denied the INPS’ figures, saying it was “taking part in instrumentalization.”  She spoke at the Senate on June 10 and at the Chamber of Deputies the next day and detailed the government’s calculations to determine the 65,000 beneficiaries of the interministerial decree of June 5.  the decree exonerates them from the pension reform, the government reminding that, to ‘lessen’ the impact of the reform, it planned on ‘safeguarding’ workers meeting the criteria for retirement under the previous scheme – before December 31, 2011 – and unemployed people close to retirement age.
