Luxembourg: youths challenge the measures intended to reduce their unemployment rate

Youngsters in Luxembourg are very angry. This anger reminds that which took place in France earlier this year over the youths job contract intended to favor the integration of young persons on the labour market. In Luxembourg, the governments wants to lower youth unemployment by making young job seekers less "passive” and by changing the conditions of access to unemployment insurance. (Ref. 061074)

The government plans to abrogate certain articles of the Labour code relating to the unemployment indemnities after a training period of six months for young persons who left or finished their school days. This indemnity is 70 % of the social minimum wage (a little more than 1000 euros). On the other hand, the plan provides for the orientation of these youngsters towards a special contract (CAE) of 12 months maximum or towards a contract introduction to employment (CIE) of 24 months.
