Malta: threatened by legal action at CJEC, the government must conform to the directive on fixed-term contracts in the public sector

The European Commission asked some explanations to the Maltese government concerning the non implementation of the fixed-term contracts directive, which forbids to use successive fixed-term contracts in the public sector. If Malta does not change its regulations, the Commission might launch legal action. (Ref. 06941)

The Directive 99/70/EC notably prevents abusing of successive fixed-terms contracts. Following a complaint from a trade union stating that the measures to prevent abuses at the national level do not cover employees in the public sector, the Commission contacted the Maltese authorities.
