Mexico: General Motors plans eight weeks of technical unemployment and forced holidays for 4,600 workers

Silao, activity keeps being suspended: the third began last week and will last for two months as of mid-May. Employees who haven’t been put on technical unemployment are forced to go on holiday. In Mexico, the American auto giant already laid 600 people off this year and is thinking about 300-400 more. Unions are accusing the manufacturer of keeping profit-sharing for 2008 from its 20,000 Mexican employees. (Ref. 090457)
