Netherlands: Parliament discusses a bill on working time

The final version of the bill on working time (Arbeidstijdwet, ATW) is being discussed at the Parliament. After the debate, Aart Jan de Geus, the minister of Social affairs and employment, agreed to guarantee all workers at least 13 Sundays off each year, unless a collective agreement departs from this rule. Aart Jan de Geus, the minister of Social affairs and employment, has agreed to guarantee employees a minimum of 13 Sundays off a year. This reform was requested by a majority of MP ’s, from the right (CDA, currently in power) as well as from the left.

Negotiation of working time. From January 1st, 2007, firms and labour unions will be able to freely negotiate working hours, as part of collective agreements. A first amendment to the ATW was adopted on February 6th. It provides for 4 major limits
