Italy/ Populist League and Five Star Movement finally form a government. Three months after elections in Italy, the country finally has a government. Giuseppe Conte, an unknown lawyer, will take the role of President of the Council of Ministers, the head of government. The new executive will be tasked with implementing the so-called “government contract” drawn up by the Five Star Movement and the Northern League (see article no. 10687), and which has already caused European markets a fright. The two key power bases of the goverment, which was sworn into power on Friday, will be Luigi Di Maio, leader of the Five Star Movement, who will take the role of minister for economic development, and Matteo Salvini, who is at the helm of the League and will take the interior minister position. While members of government have demonstrated hostile positions as regards the European Union, two appointments have been made that will calm fears among Italy’s European partners.
