Slovakia: new Government promises changes

New Slovak Prime Minister, Robert Fico, in the government's statement released this month mentioned changes to the Labour Code and to the tax system and system of social benefits. The government aims at fulfilling the Maastricht criteria and will strive for introducing the Euro currency already in 2009. In order to achieve this, the PM gave a stop sign to privatization process of strategic businesses, promised a new "millionaire's tax" – progressive taxation which would raise taxes on people in the highest income brackets, and planned to adopt an amendment to the Labour Code which should strengthen the position of employees.
