Spain: adoption of the bill creating a status for self-employed workers

The Council of ministers adopted, on November 24th of this year, the bill creating a status for self-employed workers. This bill meets the main demands introduced by professional organizations (see story n°06952). Among the new measures: creation of unemployment coverage for self-employed persons and a specific legal status for the self-employed, economically dependent workers. (Ref 061188)

The main novelties contained in this bill are:

  • The recognition of a right to an early retirement for self-employed workers who work in hard, dangerous or toxic conditions.
  • The installation of a system of social coverage in case of suspension of activities of the self-employed person, identical to unemployment. This system will be financed by contributions but respectful of self-employed workers’ wishes.
  • The obligation to pay contributions for work accidents and occupational diseases.
