Spain: public employees down in the street against new austerity measures

Spontaneous gatherings.  These spontaneous gatherings, rather unusual in Spain, started on Friday, July 13, as soon as the reform passed.  At the same time, a group of employees working at Moncloa (the official residence of the Head of State), booed and hissed when the President and Ministers walked by, towards the Council of Ministers where they approved the measures.  That same night, hundreds of demonstrators gathered in front of the people’s party, objecting to the program that rescues banks at the expense of public employees.  These gatherings continued during the weekend and on Monday, fueled by groups of employees working for towns and ministries, health staff, policemen and firemen, among others.  Unions called for new waves of protest tonight at 7 in front of the Ministry of Finance.
