UE : the European Commission intends to take action against member states failing to respect the directives on work time

Hence, the Commission is determined to initiate proceedings in order to impose sanctions on member states failing to reach agreement on the revision of the work time directive. At the last EU ministers council meeting, inasmuch as the member sates had failed to reach a general compromise on the text (eg. article n° 06552), certain member states suggested to split the draft directive, thereby leaving unchanged the main stumbling block, that is to say the part on individual opt out ( eg. our articles n°06542 and 06525) and dealing only with the period issue in order to counter the decisions of the Court. However, the European Parliament opposed this approach and the Commission adopted the same position. Were the ministers to persist  with the idea of splitting the draft directive, the Commission might well withdraw it.
