Venezuela: enforcement of new Labor Law giving workers more protection

Participative project.  The new Labor Organic Law (LOTT), as it is officially called, is the result of a participative project: 19,000 measures likely to be added to the reform were drafted during 1,800 workers’ meetings across the country.  President Hugo Chávez, using his special legislative prerogatives, appointed a presidential committee to draft the reform.  The opposition and some employers criticized the secrecy culture and the lack of debate surrounding the project according to them.  The law was published in the Official Journal on May 8, the day it came into force.  The LOTT, made up of over 500 articles, contains substantial reforms and gives workers better protection in several areas.  “Work aims to overcome capitalistic exploitation” reads Article 25.
