Qatar announced the introduction of protection standards for foreign workers operating on construction sites for the soccer world cup in 2022. But the International Trade Union Confederation says these standards don’t guarantee the respect of workers’ fundamental rights.
For several months, workers’ living and working conditions on the sites of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar have been vividly criticized by organizations defending human rights, unions and journalists. Since construction began, hundreds of immigrant workers have already died. In a resolution adopted in November, the MEPs called on the responsibility of European businesses involved to enforce social standards, and on the International Federation of Association Football (Fifa) to send a clear, strong message to Qatar.
