On 22 December Argentina voted in a reforming liberal as the country’s president. Difficult social negotiations are expected as a result of tough economic measures that will have to be taken and that will hit Argentinians’ pockets hard. Another consequence of his election is that there will be a shift in the power balance among unions.
A former business man, mayor of Buenos Aires since 2007, and thirteen years the president of the prestigious soccer club Boca Juniors, Mauricio Macri will take up his role as president of Argentina on 10 December, marking a change from twelve years of a Kirchner holding power. Most notably this change will be felt at the social level via a reintroduction of annual sector negotiations as well as a policy facilitating the setting up of union bodies. Whilst the former President, Cristina Kirchner has been regularly accused of governing on a unilateral basis without consulting or heeding the appropriate authorities, Mauricio Macri has not ceased voicing his willingness for dialogue with all sectors of society, including the opposition.
