Who spearheaded the digital transition at your company? Your CEO, your technical director or Covid-19? This joke has been circulating at Taiwanese companies over recent weeks. On 1 April, the Taiwanese Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced that companies unable to guarantee social distancing would have to close temporarily and that penalties will very soon be put in place. Since January, when the first cases were reported in China, the state has pursued a strategy of stemming the spread of the epidemic, predominantly harnessing anticipatory measures and strict isolation in the case of ill people, those potentially infected and at-risk individuals.
Covid-19 spurs on digital transition at Taiwanese companies
Taiwan is one of the countries that has been least impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. The island off the coast of China has recorded only 339 infections (as of 2 April), the vast majority of which are imported cases, and the Taiwanese population has not gone into lockdown. So far, no company located in the state has been requested to close its doors. However, in line with the government’s efforts to stem the epidemic before it spreads across the country, companies are being encouraged to review their management methods and, in particular, transition to remote working, a practice that has been unpopular up until now.
