While the European Commission is hoping for the rapid adoption of its Omnibus package, the co-legislators have already taken up the text. While the executive hopes to maintain a position that it considers to be a balance between competitiveness and maintaining the objectives of the Green Deal, support is growing for both the position trying to mitigate the text and on the contrary, to take it further.
Two weeks after the European Commission presented the Omnibus package, debate had already got underway on 10 March in the European Parliament. The European People’s Party (EPP), President Ursula von der Leyen’s majority backers, proposed the application of an urgency procedure, which requires majority voting but which could speed up the vote on the text enacting the postponement of the application of the CSRD for companies (with fewer than 500 employees) as well as the one-year postponement of the deadlines of the Corporate sustainability due diligence directive (CSDDD).
