and optical products sector reaped in €154 billion in profit, the report
ordered by the European Commission shows that, over the last decade, imports
grew more quickly than exports for these types of products. Growth in this
sector, three times faster that the rest of the EU economy, was even more so in
the new Member States even though in absolute terms added value was lower than
in the EU15 (less than 5% of the latter’s added value). With 134,000 businesses,
the sector accounts for nearly 2 million jobs in the EU, i.e. 5.98% of
manufacturing employment and 0.94% of overall employment. 53% of these jobs are

video and telecom.
