UNI Europa held its conference from 14-16 March in Rome where 800 delegates gathered together to discuss ways stronger trade unions can change Europe via more powerful negotiating and promoting quality jobs in the context of a digital economy.
Your conference slogan was Changing Europe Together. What exactly does this mean in concrete terms?
Oliver Röthig. The idea was to take into account the fact that Europe is changing along with political challenges. We are facing Brexit and the refugee crisis but we are also contending with the aftermath of the financial crisis, the Greek problem, etc. As well as changes and challenges, we have a European Commission that is not very enthusiastic about pushing for social and labour rights within the EU. There is a significant process underway that is continually moving us away from a social Europe. On top of this we also have to meet the challenges of the digital revolution that of course will impact us.
